Rachel V. Feast Interview

In addition to the cover with Jess Lathwood, ICON magazine’s November issue also featured an interview and feature on myself and my photography journey. They used some of my favorite images to highlight my work and even slipped a photo of me in there.

What inspires you?
The young models and dancers I work with. I find it amazing working with a child who knows exactly what they want and watch them work to get there. I learn so much from working with these kids and their energy is infectious.

How long have you been working in the photography arena?
At age 15 I was the editor-in-chief for a kids fashion magazine called Little One Magazine. Through working with the magazine I discovered my passion for photography. I was constantly seeing all these amazing images taken by photographers all over the world and I was inspired. At age 18 I decided to take the leap and pursue photography as a career. I haven’t looked back since.

What were the challenges that you most commonly faced and how did you deal with them?
Covid was a major challenge.
Pre-covid I was able to travel to Australia and work over there. I went about every 6 weeks and couldn’t get enough of it. It was so fun meeting new people and shooting in locations I never had before. I formed some amazing relationships with clients and their families. I am hoping to get back over there at the start of 2023 after 3 years of being unable to.
Another challenge for me can be staying motivated. Sometimes I need to step back a little and really think about my goals as a photographer. A great way for me to stay motivated is to get creative and do something totally different to what I usually do.

What do you enjoy the most about your job as a photographer?
I love the feeling you get when you know you’ve got the exact shot you needed. I get so excited when my visions come to life. At the same time however, I love when dancers pull off a move that you totally weren’t expecting and it becomes one of your favorite photos ever! Refer to the headstand image of Imogen, she just casually whipped this one out and I was lucky to catch it at the perfect moment. Can you believe she’s just 9!?

If you were to give advice to someone about how to become a photographer, what would you say? What would you not say?
I think the most important thing for a new photographer to discover is their personal style. Photography isn’t just about taking pictures, it is about capturing people at their very best. I love a good personality shot where the child just shines and adds their own flare to the image. It’s important to be fun, encouraging and patient to work with kids.

How do you make a picture stand out?
I can visualize images inside my head, I go into a photoshoot knowing exactly what I want to capture. I can even visualize the exact lighting I need to make this happen. This preparation helps me to really capture something I love. In my portrait images the most important thing is the eyes, I love eyes and I love making them stand out. To me this is what makes or breaks a photo.

In your opinion, what is the most difficult part of working as a photographer?
Not having a set schedule. Every week is different for me, sometimes I am on location, in the studio or just at home editing. I don’t book shoots too far out so I never really know what I am doing until closer to the time. I have to be prepared to have slow weeks, busy weeks and often an unsteady income.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
That’s hard to answer and to be honest I am not entirely sure. I take things week by week. I do have goals but I try not to put too much pressure on myself.
